St. Ita's School has been part of the educational landscape in Drogheda for over 50
years. The school has grown to a population of 137 boys and girls. The Catholic
ethos of the school allows for the development of our students both educationally
and pastorally.
St. Ita’s is a co-ed school for children aged 5-18 years who have a mild general
learning need. Referrals are made to the school through N.E.P.S., the school
psychology service, or the Early Intervention team from the H.S.E. The school is
purpose built and currently has thirteen classes.
Our School History
St. Ita’s school was founded in 1963. At this time the school was catering for
children primarily in the local area of Drogheda.
Refurbishments took place to the internal building structure that enabled adequate
room for the growing school population. These works concentrated on new
electrical, heating and roofing upgrades.
In 2009 a new woodwork/art room was built on the site to cater for the increased
needs of the pupils who are taking part in QQI and Junior Certificate exams and
coursework.
An additional two classrooms were built in 2013 to cater for QQI expansion and the
school now offers numerous Level 1, 2 and 3 modules.
In 2016 the school further developed a second campus, “Shamrock Lodge”. Three
additional classrooms to cater for the new L2LP classes were built. This allows for
36 pupils to study at Level 2 on a curriculum specifically designed for children with
learning difficulties
The Structure of St. Ita’s
Junior School (P1-5)
Our Junior School is made up of 5 classes. All follow the framework laid out by the
NCCA national curriculum. All classes take part in cookery, hip hop, swimming,
drama and gardening.
Middle School (MS1-4)
The middle school comprises of 4 classes. They are following the new Junior Cycle
Programme (L2LP) and participate in many different activities such as running their
own mini company and organising a school event. As our school is growing we now
have a split site and three MS classes have taken up residence in our new purpose-
built modular building, Shamrock Lodge.
Senior School (LL1-LL3A/B)
Students in the senior end of the school are now completing the QQI qualification.
Students have successfully passed in subjects such as numeracy, literacy, personal
safety and personal care. This year many new additional level 2 QQI modules have
been added and students have been enjoying modules such as photography and
childcare.
Our School Crest
Our new crest was designed by our students. It represents four
images that are important to our school; friendship, our local
community, technology and the arts.
